Verify website address for your Google Developer Account through Google Search Console

Guide on how to verify your web address as part of the Google App Account setup process.

Updated over 5 months ago

Google requires a validation of website address ownership / control for the finalisation of the setup of the Google Developer Account. The validation is performed as a combination of validation of a property in Google Search Console and further verification inside of the Google Developer Account.

For full information on how to verify a domain with Google, see Google's own help article on the subject of ownership verification.

Validation in the Google Developer Account

This validation can only be triggered by the account owner following the steps below. For this to succeed the validation of the property first has to have been performed in the Google Search Console. At times this is already in place, so testing the quick steps below can be worth a try before looking into Google Search Console.

  1. Log in to the Google Developer Account

  2. Click “View details” to Verify your organisation’s website

  3. Click “Verify website”

  4. In the Account Details page, scroll down to the “Organization website” and click Verify (if you are the account owner you would see this as a clickable option next to the web address)

  5. If you are not the site owner, a request will be sent to the site owner. This process relies on Google Search Console. The owner will see this request inside of Google Search Console in the list of Notifications. When the owner confirms the request, you might receive an email verification.

Google Search Console

For the validation process above to go through the website has to be a validated property in Google Search Console on your Google Account, the same account as you use for your Google Developer Account. If the email used for the setup of the Google Developer Account, then that email address / user could be added to the property of the Google Search Console to make the process easier according to this article.

There are two main ways to verify control over a website address in Google Search Console, as seen by how the process below branches out into two options. The initial steps are the same regardless.

  1. Click “Start now”

  2. In the dropdown, select the option “Add property”

  3. Now there are two options, either Domain or URL Prefix. The Domain process is the most common and requires updates to the domain settings of your site, e.g. at a domain provider such as Loopia.

  4. Enter the website address details as per requested format for either process, note that the format of the website differs between the two options and it is important to follow the format exactly.

  5. Domain option
Copy the text string and add it as a TXT DNS record where you manage your domain settings.

  6. URL prefix option
Download the HTML-file and upload it to your site as per the instructions. Then click Verify.

  7. When verification is successful as per the image below in Google Search Console, go back to your Google Developer Account and perform the steps as listed per above.

On top of the two main ways of site owner verification there are also the options of going through Google Tag Manager or Google Analytics.
